Re-Framing the Third Space

Project by Meryl Henderson

Third spaces are considered anywhere outside of work or home that people can gather or spend their time. Today, many of these places have been commodified and cost money, creating a gap in usage by differing groups of people and an effective impact for a community. In New York, these free third spaces are even harder to come by, which is why a space like Sara D. Roosevelt Park is such a prime opportunity to create a place for communities to gather, host celebrations, and grow outreach. The goal of this project is to create spaces that are flexible and can change with the circadian rhythms of users and the metabolic cycles of neighborhoods in one of New York’s most diverse and important convergence points. This adaptive reuse of old scaffold accompanied by an above ground walk way creates a unique experience for community members and visitors alike.
