The NYCHA Cooper Park housing complex, situated at the convergence of Newtown Creek’s 180-year petrochemical legacy and one of America’s largest underground oil spills, demands architectural intervention as rising vapors and dust particles create a density of respiratory illnesses—through an edible sugar-filled substrate, the walls become porous membranes that RE-expose tenants to a diversity of microbes while filtering and capturing contaminated air.
