Project by Ummy Chavaivid
My subject of study is play , largely inspired by the nostalgic feeling from playing on play structure, slides, and trampolines as a child. From personal experiences and interests, I want to form my own interpretation of the feelings I’ve gained from being on the play structure as a child, again as an adult, and how the natural world around it creates a sense of inner happiness. While this project took many trials and errors in terms of materiality, I ended up using fluorescent acrylic sheets that had been inspired by a cafe called “Kanom” in Bangkok that I used to frequent as a child. My work drew inspiration from many artists, while I started off with Frei Otto’s work with tensionalities as my main inspiration, I gradually geared more towards artists such as Isamu Noguchi’s playscape or the Boston City Hall playground designed by Sasaki. My work focuses on play and fun- and I wanted my final project outcome to fully embody that not just for me, but for the audiences as well.
