“This project examines underutilized aspects of existing spaces and materials. Located atop long, pitched roof homes in South Richmond Hill Queens, this ADU uses sorghum to create spacious rooftop dormers. This attic retrofit maximizes living space in the existing structure and avoids the need for carbon intensive foundations. It provides an alternate housing option to the basement units prevalent in the area and can be inserted into properties where narrow lots create space constraints. It provides a low cost, and low carbon alternative to densify the neighborhood.
Sorghum is a carbon superpower, that contains untapped potential as both a crop and a building material. As a crop it is able to sequester high amounts of carbon and regenerate soil health. Its grain can be used as a clean alternative to cellulose insulation while its stalk can be used as organic strand board.”
