This project imagines residential space for 65-70 year-old elderly parents moving in with relatives in New York City. In this scenario, the elderly parents have just begun to move into living with their children again so the ability to live independently was prioritized in the design. Though in the beginning the elderly parents have bad joints, as time passes, it turns into needing to utilize walkers and wheel chairs within the domestic space. Due to the small scale of an ADU, this case study can be a testbed for different variations of accessible housing in New York City than we currently have. From the previous assignment I tested biomass products (i.e. sawdust & OSB) with latex. The qualities of the latex led me to take advantage of softness, flexibility, hydrophobic, and antimicrobial qualities as a material to explore how this material could be applied to an exterior and interior application as a result of the previous material study. Based on these findings it led me to imagine how this flexible material would be most ideal and applicable to aging in place as an alternative to plastics.
