Art Cove is a sand collecting device on Napeague Harbor. Used as an informal lodging space for the nearby Art Barge, a historical institution that teaches painting and sculpture, the building acts as both a social space and a creator of landscape.
The sandy dunes of Napeague are constantly shifting, and this project seeks to offer the Art Barge a more solid piece of landscape to inhabit. Erosion, strong winds, tidal flooding and a rising sea level will cause Napeague to disappear in the coming decades. Art Cove mitigates this process by collecting sand through its cove foundations. These in turn create points of higher ground close to the Art Barge so that the artistic program can continue.
