1D Triangulated Truss (Case Study:London Stansted Airport)

Project by: Alexia Hernando Cracco, Jonathan Liboyi, Maksud Z Malik Aslanov, Won Hwang, Yifan Lloyd Zhang

This project examines the Stansted Airport Terminal by Foster + Partners as a highly integrated long-span structural system. Focusing on the logic of 1D triangulated trusses, the study breaks down the terminal’s modular roof bays and tree-like columns to understand how loads are distributed and transferred. Through drawings, diagrams, and physical models, the project translates the complexity of the building into a clear structural language.

Beyond structure, the analysis highlights how circulation, daylight, and mechanical systems are embedded within the same framework. The repetition of modular units allows for expansion, while maintaining spatial clarity and operational efficiency.
