UN/SEEN aims to create a symbiotic relationship between urban infrastructure and public space at Robert Moses Playground, an under-utilized public park bisected by a ventilation tower of Queens Midtown Tunnel. It’s also an endangered public space; the United Nations is trying to obtain the land. The proposed leaning mass embraces the ventilation tower and introduces an open space that opens up towards the United Nations Headquarters, reviving the site’s public nature. Ventilation ducts are rebuilt in a way that reveals and celebrates their presence in the city. Taking the form of concrete columns, these ducts become part of the building’s structure. The building integrates urban infrastructure and weaves through the public space. As a Center for Urban Infrastructure, it aims to challenge urban issues and reveal otherwise hidden infrastructure.
