Contained Circulation reorganizes trash and exposes typically concealed waste production processes, creating a series of interventions that can adapt to a variety of states and ultimately allow each design to collect, contain, and sort trash while introducing new productive and spatial functions. Three design interventions occupy specific territories related to tourist trash: dumpsters on the street, trash cans on the sidewalk, and hotel lobbies. In each of these design proposals, methods of trash disposal organize and inform the circulation network. Different-sized holes on the facade allow for the sorting of the trash by size. Furthermore, the enclosure’s elastic surface bulges outward when containers become filled with trash. This has a social impact: as the production of trash increases, circulation through the intervention is gradually obstructed.
