Columbia University has a dominant presence and a strong influence along Broadway from 87th to 120th Street. The initial research shows that Columbia owns a huge amount of 4.3 million square feet of air right, giving it incredible opportunities for future development. This project explores the possibility of taking 5% of Columbia’s air right to create a new type of shared classroom space distributed along Broadway, as a means for Columbia as a private educational institution to give back to the public and the to dissolve the disconnect between the university and the larger community. The project focuses on one scenario where the new classroom space is attached to an existing K-8 school. Inspired by origami folding mechanisms, the proposed space is developed as deployable volumes that expand and collapse to create an active and flexible environment that engages the existing programs while shaping a new experience.
