My project provides affordable communal housing echoing the cultural pride and sense of community in Jackson Heights. In addition, it combines this program with childcare in a way that invites residents to be involved in their children’s play. Systematically, the Universal Childcare plugs into the existing school system in the area: adding the missing link for ages 0-3. However, rather than simply focusing on these formal play spaces used for the childcare, spaces for play are prioritized through the entirety of the project. My project takes on an attitude about shared space at various scales and how it innately provides opportunities for shared labor. Communal living spaces, courtyards, bridges, and entire buildings in the project provide safe, flexible space for children of all ages to play.
