Angle of Repose is a building technique invented by using a pile of material, such as sand or corn, to create a natural cone that becomes formwork to create a concrete shell structure. Different materials moisture and particle sizes produce unique cone forms. This project creates habitable spaces using techniques such as stacking, overlaying, layering, and multi-pours.
This project is located in one of the leading states for energy and agriculture, Wyoming. Due to Wyoming’s expansive fields and climate, its farming industry has thrived producing crops such as hay, barely, and corn. Around 10% of the produce is wasted every year due to policy changes. The Angle of Repose takes advantage of these excess grains by using them as formwork, saving building material, and creating intricate textures.
