Intermediate Dwelling

Intermediate Dwelling questions the common public/private relationship in modern housing designs. The domestic typology names of “rooms” set by physical partitions, demarcates a continuous flow of activities including sleeping, bathing, eating, working, and entertaining. The project is designed with domestic scenarios (units) that function with movable walls and façade to allow flexibility of household sizes and freedom of activities. On a community scale, intermediate spaces connecting domestic scenarios encourage more interactions among smaller clusters of families. The central courtyard and terrace invite a mixed age group doing different activities to also interact in a mutual space, as a way to help mitigate the neighborhood’s concerns with physical health and lack of community connection.
