P.S. 64 Reimagined

Should architecture for children look like architecture for children? Where does the authority of the designer stand in the built environment? P.S. 64 Reimagined aims to answer these questions through its design process. It transforms the building into a massive toy, and reconfigures the “found object"––in this case the brick façade of the existing landmarked structure––to better fit the needs of the contemporary student. With the new design, the brick façade surrenders its structural qualities but retains its visual integrity to cooperate with its urban historic environment. An homage to the original design is juxtaposed with the dreamlike atmosphere that is created in the interior courtyard with the use of colored glass bricks that reflect light in a playful manner.
