Chicago’s systematic and state sanctioned violence in the criminal justice system, and bias in early forms of domestic terrorism perpetuated against black bodies––facilitated particularly by the police––enable forms of demolition, loss of life and murder. The black individuals in Chicago who have survived torture and incarceration are victims of this particular set of systems. This moment demands shifting resources away from prisons and the punishment justice system towards a form of restorative justice––opportunities that make the community safe, healthy, and strong. The Schulze Baking Company Plant has been dedicated to this restorative justice project which includes all of the programs and approaches justice in terms of values such as respect, participation, trust, forgiveness, and healing.
