Lecture by Dan Taeyoung and Jia Zhang

Jia Zhang is a research based artist and technologist. In her talk “Public Data, Data Publics,” Zhang will discuss her recent work. As the Mellon Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Center for Spatial Research, Zhang experiments with interactive visualizations to further the Center’s research. Her personal research addresses individual uses for public data. She is currently building an interactive Census atlas that allows individuals to directly engage with urban information for their own well-being. Zhang completed her PhD at MIT’s Media Lab in 2018.

Dan Taeyoung is a learner, facilitator, spatial designer, and technologist. His practice involves around collaborating to create architectural spaces and social collectives that embody how we might want to live together, as well as researching design and social tools that change the way we work together. He teaches at Columbia University GSAPP and NYU IDM; is a founding member of Soft Surplus, a co-founder of Prime Produce, a guild for social good, the NYC REIC, an real estate investment cooperative working towards anti-displacement and community land ownership. He will present recent work in his talk entitled, “Space as a Collective Technology”.

This lecture is organized by the Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design Program as part of the lecture series “Techno-Critical Assemblies.” This ongoing series brings together a diverse group of speakers whose work addresses today’s most pressing challenges⁠—environmental, political, social, and beyond.
