Jia Zhang

Adjunct Assistant Professor

Jia Zhang is a research based artist focusing on creative mapping and visualization. She also works with government data as a data visualization engineer at the nonprofit USAFacts.

Jia was a Mellon Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Center for Spatial Research (CSR) from 2018 to 2022. At CSR Jia worked on visualizations of algorithms and urban data. She also taught Data Visualization for Architecture, Urban Planning, and the Humanities.

Prior to her work at CSR, Jia completed her PhD at MIT’s Media Lab in the Center for Civic Media and Social Computing groups. Her dissertation focused on visualizations of the U.S.Census.
