Response by Amale Andraos

Adam Caruso and Peter St John established their practice in 1990. The practice’s work is enriched by an on-going dialogue with the European city and with the history of architecture, art, and culture more widely - traditions that bring an accumulated richness of expression to the work.

The practice rose to prominence after winning an international competition for the acclaimed New Art Gallery in Walsall in 1995. The practice’s engagement with the art world has been notable for the creation of museum and gallery environments that enjoy the confidence of curators and artists. Recent cultural projects include the Millbank Project at Tate Britain, Nottingham Contemporary, Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, and Gagosian Grosvenor Hill - the latest in a series of spaces for Gagosian Gallery. The practice has also undertaken a series of projects that intervene directly in the centre of a number of European cities. These include the Lycée Hotelier de Lille, a new head office for the Bremer Landesbank in Bremen, the new ZSC Lions ice hockey stadium in Zurich, as well as substantial mixed-use developments in Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Antwerp and Zurich.

Both partners are strongly committed to teaching and have taught at a number of European and North American schools of architecture. In 2011 Adam Caruso was appointed Professor of Architecture and Construction at the ETH Zurich, and Peter St John is currently visiting professor at London Metropolitan University.
