Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa
Response by Mimi Hoang

Ensamble Studio is a cross functional team founded in 2000 by Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa. Balancing education, research, and practice, the office explores innovative approaches to architectural and urban spaces and the technologies that build them. Among the studio’s most relevant completed works are Hemeroscopium House and Reader’s House in Madrid, Music Studies Center and SGAE Central Office in Santiago de Compostela, The Truffle in Costa da Morte, Telcel Theater in Mexico City and, more recently, Cyclopean House in Brookline and Structures of Landscape for Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana (USA). They have exhibited internationally at the Venice Architecture Biennale, MOMA, MAK Vienna, MIT, Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Shenzhen and awarded with international prizes including the NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards, Iakov Chernikhov Prize, Rice Design Alliance Prize for emerging architects, Architectural Record Design Vanguard Prize, among others. They currently direct the POPlab (Prototypes of Prefabrication Research Laboratory) at MIT.

Free and open to the public.
Organized by Columbia GSAPP.

GSAPP Conversations

James Brillon speaks with Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa of Ensamble Studio for Episode #27 of GSAPP Conversations. They discuss the firm’s recent participation in the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the need for embedding localized notions of prefabrication in the design process, and the beneficial ways in which simultaneously working in rural and urban contexts can inform and influence the other.
