Matthew Choi

Matthew Choi is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Real Estate Development program at Columbia University GSAPP, where he has been teaching since 2017.

Matthew is a senior commercial real estate debt and private credit investor with nearly two decades of institutional experience sourcing, structuring, and executing investments across the capital stack. Most recently, he served as Senior Investment Director and Real Estate Debt Lead for the Americas at AustralianSuper, where he led the buildout of the pension fund’s U.S. real estate debt platform, overseeing originations, underwriting, portfolio management, manager selection.

Prior to AustralianSuper, Matthew spent nearly a decade at Granite Point Mortgage Trust (NYSE: GPMT), where he was a part of the original commercial real estate team that established the firm’s bridge lending business and helped complete GPMT’s IPO in 2017. Over his career, Matthew has closed over $5 billion in floating-rate bridge loans and other structured credit investments, including senior and subordinated mortgages, mezzanine loans and preferred equity, distressed loan purchases, joint venture equity, and structured products such as CMBS B-Pieces/HRRs.

Earlier in his career, Matthew held investment positions at Torchlight Investors, Cerberus Capital Management, and GreenOak Real Estate, and began his career as an investment banking analyst in the Real Estate, Gaming, Lodging and Leisure group at Credit Suisse.

Matthew holds an M.S. in Real Estate Development from Columbia University GSAPP, where he received the Scholastic Performance Award, and won first place in Columbia Business School’s Alexander Bodini Foundation Prize. He also holds a B.A. in Business Economics with a minor in Accounting from UCLA, where he graduated cum laude with College Honors.
