Adjunct Assistant Professor

M.S. Historic Preservation

Heather Hartshorn is a building materials scientist with a background in chemistry and preservation. Her expertise is in the study of historic masonry and concrete materials, with an emphasis on their composition and performance. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Historic Preservation progam at Columbia GSAPP and Supervising Chemist at Highbridge Materials Consulting, Inc., a specialty construction materials testing laboratory in Pleasantville, NY. Her professional interests include researching and evaluating the history and performance of binder materials in American masonry, particularly those that may not be well documented or understood. She is also involved with the development of appropriate test methods to evaluate the performance and durability of masonry materials.

Heather holds a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and in Art History from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. Given the nature of her work at Highbridge, Heather has had the unique privilege to work on hundreds of historic structures including buildings, monuments, and infrastructure.
