Andrea Chiney
Arianna Deane
Co-founders, A+A+A

Andrea Chiney is a designer and educator based in Brooklyn NY. Arianna Deane is an architect and educator based in Manhattan NY. Along with Ashely Kuo, they are alumni of GSAPP and co-founders of A+A+A, a women-led studio and design consultancy. Their work explores creative solutions for the built environment with a focus on community-driven design processes. With a passion for creative public engagement, their practice employs a grassroots approach to tackle spatial justice issues and designs thought-provoking and playful additions to the urban landscape.

Their multifaceted approach has been applied to projects in sites from Chinatown and Queens, to South Florida. Past collaborators and clients have included the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Think!Chinatown, The Center for Court Innovation, The Youth Design Center, Urbane Development, The Queens Museum, and DDC New York.

Manuel Miranda
Lead Designer, MMP

As lead designer of MMP, Manuel is currently working on branding projects for the NYC Economic Development Corporation, communications for Princeton University, publication design for the Yale School of Architecture, and identity and website design for Ping Chong and Company (a theater group). Additionally, he is a Senior Critic in Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art and a mayoral appointee to the New York City Public Design Commission. Previously, he served as vice president of the New York chapter of AIGA New York, where he created programming for the Museum of Arts and Design and developed place-based design projects funded by Art Place America and the Small Business Services of New York Neighborhood Challenge Grant. In 2015, he led a multi-disciplinary team working in Paterson, NJ, that created the winning proposal for Van Alen Institute’s “National Parks Now”, a competition to imagine new audience engagement strategies at urban parks for the National Park Service.


Jonathan Lee
Creative Director, Google

Jonathan Lee is a Creative Director at Google (2011–present) where he leads teams to solve innovation × design problems for both short and long-term strategic business objectives. He specializes in the design and development of strategic product and program visions for multi-product futures–gathering user insights and needs, uniquely blending craft, strategy, and storytelling to catalyze product and marketing teams towards more coherent and more impactful futures for the Google ecosystem.

As part of leadership experience outside of Google, Jonathan has led the community as AIGA NY board President, and been a juror for the inaugural Josef Müller-Brockmann Art Prize and Fast Co Design by Innovation awards. He has also taught at Yale University’s Graphic Design MFA program, and won numerous industry awards for Google including D&AD pencils and Art Directors Club awards for branding.

Students that sign up for a portfolio review meeting must:

• Must attend lectures on Friday, February 3.
• Be enrolled in Advanced Studio VI.
• Work with academic content produced at GSAPP.
• Choose your preferred time slot on Saturday or Sunday (2/4 or 2/5) in advance. Spots may be limited.
  
  
  

REVIEW FAQ

What is a portfolio review?
It is an optional opportunity to show and discuss your portfolio — as a presentation tool, as a narrative device, as a graphic document, as a cohesive compilation of works — with designers that have all gone through the process of compiling their own bodies of work and presenting them in various forms.

What should I expect?
You will meet with a practicing graphic designer and show your work-in-progress portfolio. Reviewers can offer editorial, technical and visual advice on your academic portfolios. They will not advise on how to get a job or what an employer is looking for. Our concern is to help you conceptually and visually think through the task of presenting ideas.

How much time will I have?
Each group (of 2–3 students) will have about 25–30 minutes to briefly present and receive feedback.

What should I bring?
Bring printouts or PDFs of your WIP portfolios (as well as relevant reference materials if you wish). The more you bring, the more help/feedback you will receive.

When should I show up?
You will choose to meet on Saturday or Sunday (Feb 4 or 5) at ware Lounge. Please be on time. If you don’t show up at your given time, you will forfeit your slot.
