A Building as an Instrument

The problem of overbuilding persists. The project speaks to material reuse and energy recycling, transforming this infrastructure into an instrument. The site is a bank located at the intersection of Broadway and Spring Street. The goal was to look at this bank as a material inventory and turn it into an instrument. Powered by the existing infrastructure, such as the AC and the subway system that runs under the building, the intention is to create a symphony of different sounds. Different materials have independent properties that vibrate at different rates and create individual sounds. Changing the radius of the tube also helps create different resonances. Here, visitors can interact with the building to create melodies. Playing, listening to, or composing music greatly benefits brain development, especially for children and older adults. This proposal creates a place where people can stimulate brain activity not only by listening to, but also by composing music.
