The Kinetic Edge is an innovative housing complex for young professionals and families. Public programs are situated with connectivity to the street-level, including social incubator spaces and retail spaces to complement the apartment spaces — with architectural innovation as another driver of the complex.
The encapsulating approach to our site exploration is shaping through erosion and weathering through influences of environmental forces - sunlight, wind, rainwater run-off, and pollution shaped our concept of pavilions and a central spine.
Main units are surrounded by an exoskeleton structure with an impermeable skin allowing the users to occupy the interstitial spaces within the trusses. With this end, the occupants can protrude their living spaces or program outwards by claiming such spaces as private.
The skin located at the riverfront presents a kinetic system allowing the panels to respond to weather conditions by opening or closing as well as the will of the users in their units.
The Kinetic Edge integrates a symbiotic relationship to the river’s edge. Our sloped rooftop membranes serve as a rainwater catchment, and algae-containing cisterns are integrated into the bases of the pavilions. Water collected in the cisterns and pools heat apartments via radiant slabs.
