Centered around LGBTQ+ icon Sylvia Rivera, the project is a framework that provides a platform for memorialising queer histories and reclaiming public memorialization.
The final product is a community-produced quilt that honors people, events, and their complex natures. There is a move away from reductive, biased, or idealised representation that is often characteristic of memorials. Memorials lack accountability while the quilt offers a platform to convey a complex narrative, accommodating multiple concepts and perspectives.
The creation of the quilt is guided by a manual which was developed alongthe creation of the quilt. Comprising six overarching steps— embodiment, knowledge, perspective, detail, archive, and mobility, the manual and framework assist in the uncovering of erased stories and reclamation of public commemoration.
