Tensions In Stone

‘Tensions in Stone’ is a proposal situated at Columbus Circle that draws inspiration from anti-monuments, aiming to transform the contentious space around the Christopher Columbus statue into a dynamic hub for reflection and engagement. By adding platforms around the statue, the project allows for physical interaction, symbolizing the tensions surrounding its potential removal. Acting as a focal point for diverse communities, the intervention encourages dialogue and expression of perspectives, from celebration to protest. Divided into layers, the structure covers the monument while providing functional spaces for events, exhibitions, and gatherings. The design features double and single helix ramps, thin columns for stability, platforms for various activities, and tension wires for structural support and aesthetic appeal. The flexible use of space accommodates exhibitions exploring historical and social justice themes, protests amplifying voices on controversial issues, celebrations honoring cultural heritage, and other community activities. Ultimately, the intervention redefines Columbus Circle as a space for collective expression and debate.
