Roof To Reef

“Roof To Reef” transforms the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal at Liberty State Park into a dynamic space where history, ecology, and community converge. By replacing the terminal’s concrete roof with an innovative oyster cage roof system, the project pioneers oyster reef reconstruction while honoring the site’s rich heritage, spanning from Lenape oyster harvesting to modern urbanization.

Inspired by the Billion Oyster Project, our design accelerates shoreline reef restoration by repurposing oyster shells collected from restaurants. The transformed roof serves as an industrial site for shell processing, integrating wind channels for optimal drying. Beneath, a public wetland park, community gardens, and oyster labs foster environmental education and local neighborhood engagement.

Utilizing prevailing winds, the design maximizes efficiency in oyster processing while creating a natural habitat for wildlife. Architectural ingenuity is showcased through a roof-wall system, facilitating shell collection and creating semi-porous walls for wind protection.

The project emphasizes inclusivity between humans and nature, offering experience for both wildlife and local residents. Ultimately, “Roof To Reef” signifies a harmonious blend of historical preservation, ecological restoration, and community empowerment, addressing environmental and social challenges while fostering resilience and learning for generations to come.
