The Courtyard Reimagined transforms the central courtyard of Columbia GSAPP’s Avery Hall into a vibrant, inclusive space that fosters creativity, collaboration, and mental well-being. Recognizing the challenges faced by architecture students—such as stress, sleep deprivation, and limited communal spaces—this project proposes a rethinking of the courtyard as a sanctuary for both learning and gathering.
This reimagined space incorporates a thoughtful blend of nature and purposeful design. Evergreen trees and sensory play zones provide year-round greenery and moments of joy, while quiet meditation areas offer peaceful retreats. Collaborative picnic spaces and a café encourage connection and dialogue among students and faculty. A transparent, protective roof allows the courtyard to be enjoyed in all seasons, flooding the space with natural light and a sense of openness.
Aligned with GSAPP’s commitment to innovative pedagogy, the Courtyard Reimagined seeks to redefine what a learning environment can be. It supports neurodiversity and mental health, and sets a a new typology of how architecture schools can treat their open spaces. By creating a space that nurtures both personal well-being and collective engagement, this project explores how design in open spaces can transform schools into thriving, supportive communities.
