Habitat 1:1618

Our housing project in West Harlem, New York, serves as an affordable artists’ retreat and is thoughtfully divided into three distinct portions. The base features a cave-like language, incorporating organic forms and materials that create a sense of mystery and intimacy while hosting essential functions such as gallery spaces, a library, and an open amphitheater. This foundational level fosters a nurturing environment for artists, allowing them to engage with their work and the community.

Above this base, the middle portion consists of floors that promote visibility and interaction among residents. These open spaces encourage collaboration, allowing artists to connect and showcase their work in a shared environment. Finally, the upper mass serves as a terrace, providing additional spaces for artists and their families, maximizing views and creating communal outdoor areas for relaxation and inspiration.

Moreover, our project seeks to establish a connection with Studio Museum 127, located nearby. By integrating design elements that resonate with the artistic ethos of Studio Museum 127, we aim to foster collaboration between our residents and the vibrant artistic community it supports, enhancing our goal of creating a supportive environment for artists in West Harlem.
