Gulangyu, an island off the coast of Xiamen in southern China, has historically been subject to multiple waves of colonization and is currently facing both an onslaught of tourists, drawn to it’s unique architecture, and the increasing impacts of climate change. Addressing the local population who have been neglected in recent development, the project proposes repurposing a little used soccer field as a vibrant mix of cultural and athletic facilities. Drawing on the ubiquity of regional brick, reclaimed from demolished structures on the island, the architecture of the intervention deploys a variegated system of porous walls to create a series of microclimatically calibrated spaces for community use.
