Located in the upper Indus Valley in Northern India, the region of Ladakh has experienced the retreat of local glaciers, a critical source of water for agricultural irrigation. The alterations to the regional landscape have also impacted the migratory patterns of the indigenous pastoralists, putting their livestock in conflict with predators. The project adapts the technique of the local ice stupa’s developed as a method for storing ice as a summer water source. Proposing a large tensile construction which would accrete ice from water sprayed through a series of structural pipes, the project both acts as a reservoir and accommodates an encampment for the nomadic herders.
