Textile Exchange: an Environmental Utopia

Textile Exchange: an Environmental Utopia is a proposed system to disrupt the fast fashion industry. Harmful synthetic materials have destroyed the health of the planet and its inhabitants. Overconsumption and overproduction has allowed fast fashion to grow and perpetuate this harm. In this imagined future for the year 3000, synthetic materials have been phased out of society. Everyone wears clothing made from natural fibers and zero-waste sewing patterns. “Exchange centers” allow customers to pick up new items and drop off their old ones to be reused, recycled, or composted. Clothing is seen as a right, not a luxury. No one is limited in the amount of clothing they can have as there is no need to hoard uniforms that are easily accessible and available.
