Wreck-Reaction is a project proposal that utilizes inflatables to occupy existing shipwrecks, made by recycling the petroleum and plastic contaminants that plague the site. Ship graveyards, along with other abandoned structures near metropolitan centers, are thriving spaces teeming with life and attract a variety of individuals who seek solace or adventure away from the city. Unfortunately, these abandoned spaces are also target sites for major utopian developments and grandiose visions of global cities. In this project, I examine the Doha Ship Graveyard in Kuwait and propose temporary inflatable structures that integrate within the existing framework of its ships. The inflatables proposed are made of recycled plastic and petroleum, which currently contaminate the site. Consequently, the environmental state of the coastline is improved as the community grows. This project playfully reimagines how this inflatable community can look and how quickly the same exploitative corporate forces behind many abandoned sites can co-opt its initiative.
