AI Forms of the Abyss

Project by Vasiliki Zochiou

In 1870s, the Challenger expedition circumnavigates the world, collecting more than 4.000 species, that were then measured and taxonomized in what formed the book Art Forms from the Abyss. Inspired by Haraway’s Cyborgs and Aphotic Zone by Emilja Skarnulyte, new life forms emerge from a synergy between technology and ecology in the infinite abyss of Rhino model space, questioning the ‘expeditioner’s gaze’ by introducing new rules of engaging and viewing. The new species will emerge from forgotten Rhino blocks, materials, textures and linetypes that inhabit the Rhino Abyss and thrive and populate without the need of human input, contributing to the file’s decay and vulnerability in time. Infinite zooming in and out is no longer possible; the AI forms of life develop forms of resistance, shrinking x 0.001 when the user hovers over them, and take their scale back when the mouse goes away, in an attempt to defend their presence, and their right to not be infinitely studied in scales. WHAT ELSE COULD BE LIVING IN THE ABYSS? DO WE NEED TO KNOW?
