Mapping the Ghost: Emergence of Ghost Cities in Northern China

“The project was built on the narrative of the ghost cities emergence in the People’s Republic of China. The Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) and nighttime imagery in GIS serve as proxies for the extent of ghost cities, given the limited publicly available datasets on the subject. By overlaying the population growth of major cities and townships, the cartography attempts to illustrate the relationship between population density and the emergence of ghost cities.

The final installation serves a threshold that provoke speculation to the haunted realm. Time-based media archived public comments found on Chinese social media and propaganda from the authority. The juxtaposition attempts to render tensions among different stakeholders on the issue of ghost cities.”
