In West Harlem, 15% of students in public schools are homeless, 82% of them live in a “Double Up.” Double Up refers to two or more families residing in the same housing unit. A study has shown that children can be particularly affected by crowding in homes where a lack of quiet space can harm concentration on schoolwork, and children in crowded households may be viewed as a burden or nuisance, leading to toxic family environments. Urban Playground aims to provide space for the homeless students to escape from their crowded living conditions and have a playful space to spend their after-school hours.
