This research investigates playground closures and alternative open space for children in NYC. Our methodology involved a multi criteria decision analysis, identifying neighborhoods with certain high vulnerability indicators, including areas with a high concentration of children aged five to nine years old. After identifying census tracts with the highest need for outdoor play spaces, we selected the three highest risk as case studies. Within each of these census tracts, we located the closed playgrounds (not that one census tract did not have a playground within its borders to begin with) and identified alternative spaces for play, defined as open green space within a half mile walking distance from the closed playground.
