I Can’t Believe It’s Not Schulze! Reimagining the Next 100 Years of the Schulze Company Baking Plant

“I Can’t Believe It’s Not Schulze” is a campaign and proposal that focuses on the strategy and process for renovating the Schulze Baking Company Plant in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood, located in the historic Black Belt or Black Metropolis. This project challenges the “typical” and “traditional” historic preservation development process and proposed data center programming of the existing building. The project identifies three key opportunities for slower design that moves at the speed of residents’ trust, strategic partnerships for development, and ideas for centering the long-term care and longevity of the building beyond the scope of the studio.
