The work on view critically explores today’s most pressing issues at the intersection of climate, social and racial equity, and the impact of novel forms of technology on the built environment.
– Dean Amale Andraos
A Letter from Dean Amale Andraos
For the past three decades, Columbia GSAPP has concluded each academic year with its End of Year Show, an exhibition that celebrates and showcases student work from across the School’s degree programs: Architecture; Urban Design; Urban Planning; Historic Preservation; Critical, Curatorial, and Conceptual Practices; and Real Estate Development. GSAPP is proud to continue this tradition, following an unprecedented academic year.
The work on view critically explores today’s most pressing issues at the intersection of climate, social and racial equity, and the impact of novel forms of technology on the built environment. Combining unbounded imagination, radical experimentation, and rigorous critical thinking, the work on display comprises speculative renderings, immersive videos, compelling data visualizations, audio-based interviews, and more. This eclectic range is a testament to the students’ creativity and inventiveness as they have advanced their research through constantly evolving hybrid working models. The ethos that permeates GSAPP student projects and the profound sense of community that continues to energize the School reveals an emerging generation of designers and thinkers—deeply empathetic and with a revised global outlook—who are poised to steer new directions for their respective fields.
Presented entirely online, the 2021 End of Year Show reveals how GSAPP students are envisioning ways to address the challenges and opportunities for the future of the built environment. The exhibition launches with work from the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, and will be further expanded in August with additional works completed during the Summer 2021 semester. We are pleased to share this inspiring selection of work with our community of alumni, colleagues, and friends.
