Spatializing Environmental Justice in Harlem

Though the narratives of environmental justice activism are rich in Harlem, there is no permanent spatialization of the full environmental justice activism history of Harlem. The proposal uses three strategies to address this gap. The first is to spatialize, by providing markers at the significant site of environmental justice activism. Signage inspired by actual protest signs would draw viewers to activism site markers, which would provide a brief history of the event, movement, and key figures. The second is to contextualize, by creating a guided walking tour of these sites. This would put each site marker into context to emphasize the connected and comprehensive history of environmental justice activism. And the last is an informational finding aid website. The website would allow people to be engaged with the environmental justice activism history past their encounter with just the spatial representation of one site.
