Carmelo Ignaccolo

Carmelo is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP’s Urban Design Program. He is a Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Civic Data Design Lab), where he is pursuing a doctoral degree in City Design and Urban Technologies.

His academic research focuses on urban morphology and wayfinding theory in rapidly evolving cities, where collective identity and heritage have been constantly reshaped. He employs data visualization and mapping techniques – informed by urban analytics and spatial statistics – to investigate the complexity of our data-rich environment and to envision new design solutions at the different scales of the built environment.

Carmelo received as Fulbright fellow a Master’s degree in Urban Design from Columbia GSAPP, where he was awarded the GSAPP Prize for Excellence in Urban Design. He holds a Bachelor and a Master’s degree cum laude in Architecture-Engineering from the University of Catania in Italy and Tongji University, in Shanghai.
