MELTING is a temporary art installation that works as a tool to provoke viewers’ thoughts about heat vulnerability in Harlem. In response to the high risk of heat in Harlem and the temperature difference between neighborhoods, we aim to create an installation to narrate environmental injustice issues, especially heat risk. MELTING is a temporary ice sculpture in the shape of real-size humans, which will be placed in different locations throughout Manhattan to prove temperature differences by recording and comparing the melting process and duration for each location. Later, the results will be exhibited along with historical research. Through these interventions, we aim to portray the vulnerability in this neighborhood, educate people about the history and the recurring problem of environmental injustice, and hopefully provoke thoughts and ideas – and therefore, solutions – on this issue.
